Dr. Nihad A. Hussain is a professor of Mechanical Engineering and Associate Dean of Engineering at San Diego State University. He received his B.S. (honors) from Baghdad University in 1962, his M.S. degree from Purdue University in 1963, and his Ph.D. from the University of Notre Dame in 1969. All his degrees are in Mechanical Engineering. He joined the Mechanical Engineering faculty at San Diego State in 1969, and has also served as a research faculty fellow at both NASA-Lewis Research Center and the U.S. Air Force at Wright Patterson AFB. In addition, Dr. Hussain served as a consultant to several engineering companies and state agencies. He has been a consultant to the California Energy Commission in the area of Circulated Fluidized Bed (CFB) Combustion.

Dr. Hussain's expertise and interests are in the allied fields of heat transfer, fluid mechanics, thermodynamics and energy systems. He has contributed more than thirty articles to the heat transfer/fluid mechanics literature. His specific research interests include mixed convections heat transfer in horizontal tubes, forced convection heat transfer in the entrance region of heated ducts, modeling of buoyant two-phase plumes in stratified environments, and thermal radiation in semi-transparent media.

He is a member of ASME, AAS, Sigma Xi, Tau Beta Pi, Phi Beta Delta, and Phi Kappa Phi. He is very active in ASME where he is serving as a member of the Committee on Environmental Heat Transfer (K-19), which he chaired during the period of 1987-90. He chaired the Heat Transfer Division's Membership Development Committee (1989-91), and represented the Basic Engineering Group on the National Membership Development Committee from 1990 to 1993. Dr. Hussain was the ASME representative to the National Heat Transfer Conference Coordinating Committee and was the Technical Program Chairman of the 28th National Heat Transfer Conference in 1992. In addition, he is presently representing the Council on Engineering on the Committee on Member Interests, and serves as a member of the Adhoc Committee on Heat Transfer Education. He serves as a reviewer for several heat transfer journals which include the ASME Journal of Heat Transfer, the International Journal for Heat and Mass Transfer, AICHE Journal, and various conferences. Dr. Hussain also has been a reviewer for NSF, and the U.S. Energy Department.

Dr. Hussain is mentioned in Who's Who in Engineering, Who's Who in Technology, International Who's Who, Who's Who in the West, and Who's Who in Science and Engineering.
